Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (4/5)

The book is about a 16-year-old girl named Shiori’anma who has six brothers. She is the princess of Kiata and is betrothed, but has been against the wedding and being married from the start. She does not want to leave her home behind and live far away from her brothers and father. She has discovered she has magic which is forbidden in Kiata, but experiments with what she can do. An accident with her magic on the day of her betrothal ceremony leads to her stepmother, Raikama, growing suspicious of Shiori and her magic, keeping a careful eye on her. Though the incident does lead to a delay in the ceremony, she is forced to make an apology gift at her stepmother's suggestion. When Shiori uncovers her stepmother’s own secret magic she rushes to warn her brothers but her stepmother finds out. She puts a bowl on Shiori’s head and places a curse turning her brothers into crimson cranes and for every word she speaks one of her brothers will die. She gives Shiori a warning when she speaks, killing six swans instead of her brothers. Leaving Shiori unrecognizable in a town far from her home and no idea where her brothers may be and how to break the curse. Meanwhile, without the princes and princess of Kiata tensions arise and secrets are revealed. Follow Shiori on her journey to get to her brothers and find a way to break the curse and get back home to stop her stepmother.

The book was a bit slow at the beginning but as it went along I really enjoyed the story though I personally felt that it lacked depth in some parts. It was interesting to see how things were going to play out. However, it did leave on a cliffhanger so it was not the most satisfying ending because there is still another book. So if you do not want to read a series, I would not read this book because you are not quite finished with the story after ‘Six Crimson Cranes’. If you do like fantasy books and were intrigued by the summary, I recommend that you try out the book.
