Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is a fantasy novel that follows the journey of six teenagers known as the crows. In the world this story takes place in, there are people with special abilities known as Grisha, who are able to manipulate different types of elements or matter. In this novel, a poison used to enhance the abilities of the Grisha has been discovered, but using the poison comes at a dangerous cost. The man who created the poison is being held in one of the most secure prisons in the world. The crows are offered a substantial amount of money to break into the prison and save the scientist that created the poison, in hopes of him being able to reverse the effects of it. This story is full of unexpected twists and turns, which will be sure to keep the reader wanting to turn the page.
There is also a large amount of diversity among the characters, which adds more complexity to the story. While reading the book, the reader will find that each character has their own unique backstory, and every reader will see a part of themselves in at least one of the characters. The book was written from the different perspectives of the crows, and I think helps add depth to the story because the reader will experience the event through different perspectives, which will add to their better understanding of the characters. The story also raises awareness about many social issues through the mistreatment of the Grisha and other groups of people. In the novel the Grisha are constantly referred to as witches, they are convicted of crimes they did not commit, and they are sentenced to death after being found guilty of these crimes during unfair trials. The author also covers other types of mistreatment throughout the novel, without drifting off from the actual story. I think that Leigh Bardugo did an extraordinary job writing this novel. She painted a clear picture of her characters, covered many important topics, and told the story of a captivating adventure. I was full of never-ending excitement and anticipation as I read this fascinating story.
