Spearhead by Adam Makos is a non-fiction book about a World War 2 tank gunner named Clarence Smoyer. The story follows Clarence from when he joins the tank crew to many years after the war as he tries to deal with the guilt from possibly killing a civilian. Parts of the book are written from the perspective of Gustav, a German tank gunner. The book shows how war can affect both sides in horrible ways. Something I found interesting is how much luck plays a factor in who lives or dies. For example when Clarence's Pershing turned the corner in Cologne and saw the enemy Panther's gun pointing right at them, the Panther's crew didn't shoot because they didn't know whether the Pershing was American or German. The last part of the book is about how Clarence tries to handle his emotional injuries from the war. I agree with the authors point of view about how war is destructive to both sides as well as civilians. Even though Clarence has no physical injuries i can see he had suffered a lot. I think this is a book about war that is anti-war because its very personal. I enjoyed this book because I like the topic, content, and how well written it was. Not everyone will enjoy this book because of all the death and violence that comes with war.
