The book Steelheart, written by Brandon Sanderson is the first in a series called The Reckoners. Beings named Epics start appearing around the same time the satellite Calamity appears in the sky. They are normal people but with powers, such as electricity, or the ability to heal themselves and others. All the Epics so far have been evil, and only want power. They kill people without mercy and take control of the cities. The main character, David, wants to join a group of people called The Reckoners, who hunt and kill Epics. The Reckoners travel around to find the weaknesses of Epics in different cities. After David joins the Reckoners, he convinces them to go after a powerful Epic, Steelheart, who is the ruler of the city of Newcago. Steelheart’s weakness is unknown, although he was hurt a long time ago by David's father in a bank. Steelheart destroyed the bank to hide all the evidence as to how he was hurt, and in anger, turned all of Newcago to steel. Newcago is also in the dark after an Epic, Nightwielder, made the city always night. Most people live above ground in homes cut out of the steel. However, some people live in the steel catacombs. This is deep underground where the diggers went crazy and made many tunnels, most leading to nowhere. Crazy and shady people live down there, and Steelheart has no control over what happens in the catacombs. The Reckoners have a temporary base in the catacombs, where they use gloves, called Tensors, to turn steel into a powder. The book ends on a hopeful note with the Reckoners leaving the city to hunt more epics.
Steelheart is a really good book and I think other people should read it. It shows how even though everyone is the same, people with power can become easily corrupted. I found the book after a friend suggested it to me and would recommend Steelheart to anyone looking for a good new sci-fi book. I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in The Reckoners series in the future.
