From war orphan to world renowned star.

Michaela DePrince was born in Sierra Leone which at the time was in a war. Though she struggled through loss and pain, she fought her way to being the star dancer she is today.

Born as Mabinty Bangura, DePrince was born into a war in Sierra Leone. Her mother had gotten sick and died, and her father was killed in the war. She then lived with her abusive uncle who sent her to an orphanage as he didn’t want a daughter who looked like her. Michaela was born with vitiligo, and in the community she lived in asd a child, everyone was scared of her and bullied her. During her time in the orphanage, she found a magazine page with a ballerina on it and she just knew it had to be her. After many months and years of abuse from the aunties at the orphanage she was able to go to america and get adopted by a loving family along with her best friend Mia from the orphanage. Throughout many years of hard training, learning, sweat, and tears, she achieved her dream of becoming the star ballerina she is today.

Taking Flight is a fantastic autobiography that every young person should read. Michaela shares her story of how she fought through her struggles and never gave up on her dreams.
