TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking is a great reference book to use when prepping for presentations or any public speaking within that matter. Chris Anderson uses some great TED talk examples that one could refer to at this moment if they feel like it. By using these previous TED speakers, he is able to analyze and pick apart aspects of their talks that made them so successful. Anderson’s analysis assists individuals in creating an engaging, relatable presentation. All aspects that make public speaking successful are highlighted and broken down thoroughly. Those who want to freshen up on or build upon their public speaking skills should definitely give this book a try. It brings you from the presenter’s perspective to the audience's perspective to see what works and doesn’t work when it comes to presenting. While many may understand the basics of public speaking, after recently using some of these tactics mentioned in the book in a recent presentation, I’ll say that it helps tremendously and truly does make a large difference. TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking can help with self-esteem/confidence with presenting in addition to figuring out how to make the presentation more relatable so that the viewer may feel more connected to the topic. A viewer can only understand so much of the topic that the speaker makes understandable and this book goes into depth on how to ensure that an audience member gets what the public speaker is putting down. I find that this can easily be interpreted in a successful way and reading this book could benefit many, maybe all. To further these ideas, I feel that for those who really want to enhance their presentation skills further, taking time to write down notes and big details of the book would be great help. Whether that’s through a document or handwritten, one could create something that’s reliable for reference when starting a project/presentation. Creating these notes can follow a simple rule; taking big ideas and breaking them down into main things to focus on. When a book breaks public speaking down to the extent that TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking does, it would be extremely beneficial for an individual to take advantage of that and create their personalized version of “Sparknotes” for reference.
