The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey (4/5)

Are you looking for a twist on the classic alien invasion trope? Then this is the book for you! Rick Yancey published The 5th Wave on May 7, 2013, and received lots of praise from critics and fans alike. The novel received such a positive reception that it ended up receiving a movie adaptation 3 years later, which unfortunately, did not meet the standards of the book. The 5th Wave follows the perspectives of a 16-year old Cassie and a 17-year old Ben. Their lives were relatively peaceful until a mothership appeared and blocked out the sun. What followed was 4 waves of an electromagnetic pulse that took out the world's power grid, huge earthquakes that triggered massive continental tsunamis, a disease that ravaged the population, and finally aliens disguised as humans that killed remaining survivors. These waves decimated the world’s population and dismantled any sense of cooperation that humans once had. The only thing that Cassie and Ben had left to wonder was, what will the next wave be? The 5th Wave is a unique take on the alien invasion trope and explores what defines a human as human. This book does an excellent job of accurately describing how humans would really react to an alien invasion. However, there are some parts where the author doesn’t seem to understand how a teenager thinks, or acts. But regardless, I recommend this book to anyone looking for the classic alien invasion story, but want a fresh and unique take on it.
