The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (5/5)

“ The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho is a novel that explores the journey of following your dreams and your heart. Since it was published in 1988, it has been sold worldwide and is one of the most-read books today. The book is about a young shepherd named Santiago and his journey to self-discovery. The main themes of this novel are ambition, fate, and identity. Along Santiago’s journey to discovering his personal legend, he learns many lessons and what it means to pursue your dreams truly.

The story starts in Andalusia, where Santiago is having consistent dreams about a hidden treasure near the Pyramids of Egypt. Encouraged by a king, he sells his sheep and goes on a quest filled with adventure and meaningful lessons. He leaves his old life behind of being a shepherd like everyone else and decides to follow his heart. On his journey, he meets an Englishman studying Alchemy and an Alchemist who teaches him the soul of the world. He also meets the love of his life, Fatima. He soon realized that she wasn’t the treasure he was looking for. Each encounter shapes Santiago’s understanding of his purpose and life. The novel has many metaphors and symbols, making it a philosophical read.

As I was reading the book, I realized how relatable his journey is. Everyone has goals and dreams, but the book makes you realize that the journey is just as important. Coelho uses metaphors and sort of a magical realism to add depth to the text. The book encourages the reader to follow their instincts, and never give up on their dreams, and no matter how hard the journey you can overcome the challenges. The way Coelho uses deep metaphorical words adds meaning to the text, as well as philosophical ideas.

In conclusion, “The Alchemist” is a captivating book encouraging readers to follow their dreams and aspirations. Through Santiago’s journey, he found his true self and his personal legend. Even though it’s just a story, it allows us to reflect on our own lives. It’s a book that you can re-read a million times and every time you will learn something new about yourself.
