The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzan Collins is a prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy by the same author. It follows young Coriolanus Snow when he was in school and before he became president of Panem. Snow came from a powerful family but now struggles to pay rent and keep his apartment. He attends school along with his friends and their final school project is to mentor a tribute for the 10th annual Hunger Games. He unfortunately gets assigned what he thinks is the worst tribute you could get, the girl from District 12. He meets his tribute Lucy Gray Baird and things, to his surprise, clear up and he has hope for her as she fights in the arena.
Before I started this book I thought President Snow was just born evil and grew up in the government, but that is not the case. This prequel did start a little bit slow but little by little the action added up to a great climax. It was fascinating to read about President Snow's descent into darkness and evil. I love reading books and watching movies where the main character gets manipulated into becoming a villain because they are hungry for power and control. It makes the mood of the work feel even more dark and sometimes even thrilling. This book definitely did that with its ending and prequels are always great because you can connect so much to the original series to figure out why these characters did this.
In conclusion, this book is packed with action, thrill, romance, and drama. I feel like everyone who reads this will enjoy it. Suzan Collins does an amazing job of grasping her audience with amazing stories and characters you can get attached to. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend but its probably best if they read the original trilogy first so they can better understand the book. The Hunger Games is a very popular book world and a lot of people have probably already read it because it is so big. There has already been a movie for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. In all, this book was very enjoyable and easily a five-star read.
