The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins (5/5)

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a book by Suzanne Collins. It was published in 2020 and is a prequel in the Hunger Games series, so it is not necessary to read the rest of the series before this book. The story goes as follows: Coriolanus Snow, born into one of the wealthiest families in the Capital, is now barely getting by while trying to give the illusion that his family still has money. Ten years after the war the Hunger Games are still in effect. Dr. Gual, in an attempt to get the Capital more interested in the Games, partners up with the Academy to have students act as mentors to the tributes in the Games with the reward of a scholarship to the University. Coriolanus is determined to have his tribute win the games in order for him to receive this scholarship and get his family back on top. I read the rest of the books in the series and I enjoyed them. This book is a prequel and is about the main villain in the rest of the series. I found it interesting to see his character develop. In the piroir books I didn’t really want to know about his previous life but this book was so engaging and added so much depth to his character that I couldn’t put it down. If you enjoyed the earlier Hunger Games books or you're a fan of dystopian action books, then you should check out The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Knowing Coriolanus Snow’s backstory adds richness to the world of the Hunger Games. Collins' descriptions and detail into this imaginative world are captivating.
