This book is about Coriolanus Snow, the Capitol President of Katniss’ time. In this book, he is a teenager during the tenth Hunger Games, 64 years before Katniss’ games. Snow is a mentor for the tributes, and he gets the female tribute from District 12, Lucy Gray Baird. He thinks he is screwed, but at the reaping, Lucy Gray drops a snake into the mayors daughters dress. Lucy Gray arrives at the Capitol, and Snow goes to meet her, something that none of the other mentors did. He gets to know her, and before the games occur, he ends up falling in love. During the games, he does everything he can to help her win, and she eventually does. She then returns to District 12 a winner, and Snow is feeling mostly happy. The head of the Games, Dr. Gaul, finds evidence that Snow cheated during the games, so he is sent to become a peacekeeper. He requested to be a peacekeeper in District 12 so that he could maybe have a chance to see Lucy Gray again. He gets to, and he also meets the rest of the Covey, Lucy Grays group. Snow and Lucy Gray get on really well and start hanging out often. Something goes down with some murders, and Snow's friend Sejanus is in trouble. Sejanus is eventually hung, causing Lucy Gray and Snow to decide to run away. They make it to the lake, and at the lake, Lucy Gray realizes something about Snow that makes her change her mind. She ditches Snow and runs away on her own, leaving Snow to go back to the peacekeepers. Snow goes back to the Capitol as a student in the university because he was the one who ratted out Sejanus. After what happened, he decides that nobody is going to hurt him like that again, and he decides to keep the games going. This book was a great prequel to the other Hunger Games books and provides a background on why Snow is so mean. It also shows how the Districts have been kept the way they are through the 70+ years Snow has been alive. I really enjoyed reading this book and I am definitely going to read it again. This book was a huge gap filler in the past of Panem, and it was good at showing the past life. If you are reading this book, I would suggest having read the other Hunger Games books first, as they introduce some of the characters and how everything works in Panem. They also explain how the Games work better than this book does. I definitely would recommend reading this if you like the other Hunger Games books.
