The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (5/5)

This book, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, is the definition of a read that will keep you motivated. It is filled with historical information that can be influenced by daily life, and a beautiful story of a young girl fighting for hope in Germany during WWII. Through the book, we follow death itself in a narrative story following a girl named Liesel. She finds solace in her foster father, Hans, and the Jew they are hiding, Max. It is truly life-changing how well the incorporation of Death as a character moves this book above and beyond. Although it wasn’t as relatable as some books I have read, the information was more gripping than imaginable. By the end, I had a better understanding of the tragedy taking place in 1940 Germany and overall emerged with a stronger mindset. While reading, I began to understand the true beauty of Zusak’s writing style. Being in the eyes of a young girl and her experiences, however sad they may be, opened my eyes more than ever before. Some might feel that it is a tough read, especially at first, but once you grasp the message and meaning, you will never be the same. To conclude, The Book Thief is a must-read for all engaged minds ready for a new historical fiction book. Additionally, this book was made into a movie adaptation in 2013, and though I have not had the opportunity to watch it myself, I have only heard good things.
