The Dark Place by Britney S. Lewis (3/5)

This book was about a teenager, Hylee Williams, who realizes that she can travel through time. This is found out when her house was broken into when she was 8 years old and the attacker attacked her dad and her brother. Hylee hid in the closet, closed her eyes so tight, and counted to three, but when she opened her eyes, she was no longer in the closet and was on the front porch. No one saw her or knew how she got there, but there were bigger issues to be dealt with. Her brother had gone missing. Her parents were so stressed and sent Hylee to live with her grandma somewhere else. Hylee starts disappearing more and more frequently, sometimes bringing things back with her, hearing voices, and even having the night of the attack play over in her head. Hylee meets this guy at a party named Eilam, confides in him and they try to figure out this time travel ability that Hylee has while also trying to find her brother. She is trying to find out more about her abilities and thinks that she might not be the only one with these special powers. She basically travels to the “other world” to rey and save her brother who went missing almost ten years ago. Her and Eilam start liking each other, Eilan drops a big secret which causes some tenderness in their situationship which the characters get past and eventually find out the truth together.

I was honestly really surprised when I read this book because I thought it would be a really sad, depressing book, but I found out that it was more of a creepy, sci-fi which I really wasn’t expecting when I first bought the book. I never read the back before I read books which I probably should have to have known more about what it was about and what genre it was but it wasn’t a bad book. I wouldn’t re-read it honestly since it just got boring halfway through and I didn’t want to keep going but did. It wasn’t a bad book but it definitely wasn’t that good either. I think the theme was also just not that specific and the author could have explained the process of time travel better. Also, I think that time-travel was supposed to be talked about more which I just didn’t see throughout reading the book and it could’ve been a lot more interesting to read if it was a bigger topic in the novel. I truly did love the exploration of grief that Hylee went through though, I think it was nice seeing the character grow throughout the book. It was kind of mind tripping and creepy and sometimes when reading it, reminded me of the book and movie Coraline. I also wanted to mention that the cover really gave me 2020 vibes which is why I got it and why I thought it would be interesting to read.

This book is kind of a punch into reality and sci-fi in a more teenage way. I also searched and found a book similar to this called, Get Out and read a couple of summaries of it and I think that if one enjoyed that book, The Dark Place would be a good, decent book like that. I think that the cover just made the book look very futuristic and sad, which it wasn’t that sad in the sense that there are sad aspects but not at the point that it is a main topic. This book also has a kind of romance aspect to it which was pretty interesting so if readers enjoy sci-fi YA’s and want a little more romance added into it, I think this book would be good. Overall, this is a good book, but it just wasn’t really for me.
