The Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller is a young adult fantasy book. A great read for anyone looking for an action packed good-old pirate story with a bit of romance. The main character Alosa, a seventeen year old pirate, who is the daughter of the ¨pirate king” is on a mission to retrieve a piece of a map that leads to a great treasure. Alosa is a very strong individual, both mentally and physically, and her only wish is to make her father proud. She intentionally gets captured in order to find the map. When on the ship, she can only search the ship under the cover of nightfall. Alosa struggles to find the map and sort out her new feelings towards one of her captors. In my opinion Levenseller uses amazing descriptive language to give each character life in their own unique way. I love how Alosa is this strong, capable, and intelligent woman, who is honestly inspiring; when the situation she was in felt helpless, she would always find a way out. She learns to find her own identity apart from her father. Alosa also discovers that she has a mysterious power. She realizes that she can control men's minds and see people's emotions. As the story progresses, she learns to navigate not only who she is apart from her fathers lineage but also how to wrang and use her secret powers. She doesn't like how she feels while using these powers, but at times she is forced to use them. Alosa knows her powers come with danger, but she learns to use them as a tool only when necessary. Without control of her powers, she becomes a creature that manipulates and controls without mercy. Alosa discovers that she doesn't have to fear her power any longer, she can use it as a source of strength and control. Overall, this book was a great read. It was a story full of adventure with many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was engaging the entire time. Tricia Levenseller is truly an excellent writer.
