The Elite, the second book in The Selection series, by Keira Cass, is a fictional novel that displays the effects of abusive power. America Singer, the main character, continues to compete for the heart of Prince Maxon. As The Selection for Maxon's love went from 35 to 6 girls, the competition becomes more intense. America is forced to choose between her feelings for Aspen, her old boyfriend, or Maxon, the prince who she never knew she could fall so hard for. The king, who is against America winning, purposely tries to make her fail and uses everything in his power to make the competition miserable for her. The king even uses his power to try and make America go against her own personal beliefs. Through the process, America discovers what is important to her and how she can change the world for the better.
As so many authors have done before, Keira Cass incorporates the theme of abuse of power. Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard, is a similar book in that it discusses the stratification of society and shows that those on the top can impact their will on lower members of society. The Elite was one of my favorite books because the author explores this hard topic while still incorporating sarcasm and humor to make it an enjoyable read.
This book captured my attention and kept me wanting to read more. America’s struggle to win the title of Prince Maxon’s wife while also sticking to her morals and beliefs is a journey that should be enjoyed by young readers. The strength and determination she shows are an example to others and pertinent in our lives. This book is highly recommended.
