In my opinion, this book was a brilliant idea and gave readers a point of view that is rarely thought of. I feel like young adults see children with cancer and feel sympathy but never really think about their lifestyles with the condition. This being based on a true story gave me an intense feeling of sadness and heartache for the characters. The author, John did an amazing job with the dialogue and the details within this book. He displayed imagery which made it easier to picture what was happening in the book in my head. I felt that the way families were affected and friendships changed kept the story interesting as well. The theme of hopes and dreams was illustrated well in this book. Hazel Grace, a 16 year old with aspirations but being held back because of cancer is something that is frequently seen with people with a chronic illness. However, Hazel being able to find friends, family and a lover that supported her and wanted what was best made this book heartfelt and intriguing. The actions made by the characters really showed their personality. Augustus Waters was portrayed as a “bad boy” with lots of charm. Hazel Grace was portrayed as a “good girl” who hasn't seen the world yet. The changes towards the middle of the book and new events kept the book interesting which is something I liked. I thought the book could be better by focusing more on Hazel and Augustus than the background characters and giving them more time in the story. Other than that, I thought this was an amazingly written novel which made it hard to put the book down honestly. I also feel like John did a great job of putting the emotions of the characters into words and helping the readers get a feel of the deep emotions of each character. All in all, although I couldn't really relate to this story, I really liked this book and thought it was a great read and story line. The author did an excellent job overall in almost all assets of the book.
