The book The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is a young-adult story about two teenagers, Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters, who fall in love despite dealing with the difficulties of having cancer. The book's overall theme is to live while you still have time. They share a special connection because they both know what it’s like to have cancer and how others treat people with cancer. They don’t pity each other and they treat each other as normal human beings such as those without cancer. Hazel and Gus met at a hospital playground, discussing their ex-girlfriend's cancer death. Hazel's illness worsened, and she shared a book she loved with Gus, who fell in love with the author. Gus decided to use his wish to visit Amsterdam to see Peter Van Houten, who was a friend of Hazel's. They had dinner at a fancy restaurant, They returned home, where Augustus died. Hazel had to speak at his funeral where someone handed her a note. She found it was written by Gus, stating that he kept him sick from her to encourage her to fall in love before his death. Hazel believed she had made the right choice. And that was the end. I really liked the book; the author was very good at describing the feeling of having to deal with cancer. I also think he did a good job displaying their connection and their bond with one another because they both had cancer. This book raises the issue of having a relationship while dealing with an illness. This can be very hard for a lot of people because having such a sickness can be very demanding and then on top of that it is a lot to maintain a healthy relationship with another person that can also be very demanding. The book does leave out what happens with Hazel’s cancer after Gus dies and if his death had any issues with her health. This book has shifted my opinions on how to deal with cancer. I used to believe that when you had cancer you should just stay near the doctors in case of an emergency, but because of the book, I now believe that if you have an illness like that then you should live your life to its fullest while you still have time. I am very for this book and agree with the author's choice to make the characters have cancer. I think that that aspect of their love story makes it so much deeper and more special. Another author that does that and has similar views is Rachael Lippincott who wrote the novel Five Feet Apart. This author also used cancer to deepen the two main characters' love and I one hundred percent agree with their decisions and it makes the novel so much deeper. It makes the overall concept of both novels more mature than just any romance novel. To future readers, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about two people who share something bigger than themselves and who wants to read an amazingly well-written book about something that people want but are forced not to have by the world. In conclusion, the book showed a strong theme of live while you still have time and was overall a great book.
