The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

“The Fellowship of the Ring” is the first book in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings.” It tells the story of a young hobbit (he was 51 years old and was young in hobbit years) named Frodo Baggins who received a ring from his uncle Bilbo Baggins who was the same Bilbo Baggins that went on the adventure to take back the Dwarves mountain from the dragon Smaug. The ring he received was created by a dark lord name Sauron, the ring was made with the intention to control the other rings of power and enslave the world. With this in mind Frodo along with Gandalf (a great wizard that also accompanied Bilbo in his adventure in the first book). Frodo left Bag end where he grew up, along with a ranger, an elf, a dwarf, and three other hobbits who also grew up with him. They face many obstacles such as the Nazgul also known as Ringwraith or the Nine riders, and Sauron’s army which consisted mostly of orcs. “The Fellowship of the Ring” is a very engaging read filled with elaborately portrayed characters and vivid descriptions of the beautiful middle earth captivating the reader in the story. Tolkien's ability to build these entire worlds with just his words is so wonderfully demonstrated in this book and he is capturing every bit of magic and detail in this novel. The general theme of this book is that of friendship and courage but also being able to push through what must be an extremely overwhelming situation to be in but to survive anyways. As a reader, I thought this book was extremely well written as you can probably tell already but besides that, it brought a sense of nostalgia to me as I was reading and I'm not really sure why but it sort of made me feel like a child again or at least a smaller child than I am now. While I was reading I completely let go of any stress I was feeling before and just follow the story feeling the happiness of the characters in some scenarios but also the sadness and fear in others. I even tensed up as the characters faced dangerous situations or when I thought another character was untrustworthy. For future readers, I would say just take your time with this book as it is a pretty slow read but if you have the patience and time for it and allow yourself to sink into the story and let it unfold at its own pace it is incredibly rewarding.
