The Final Gambit, a young adult novel by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, is the final book in The Inheritance Games trilogy. It is a fictional mystery and romance where a teenage girl named Avery Kylie Grambs inherits billions of dollars when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne suddenly dies. Instead of leaving the inheritance to his family and four grandsons as everyone expected, he gives everything he owns to Avery. However, she must live at Tobias’s mansion, the Hawthorne House, until she turns eighteen before she can claim the inheritance. Throughout the first two books of the trilogy, the reasons why Avery inherits the fortune are revealed, and Tobias Hawthorne’s grandsons, the Hawthorne brothers, help Avery protect herself and the fortune against those trying to take it from her, despite the fact that she took their inheritance. As Avery works to solve the mysteries surrounding why Tobias Hawthorne left her the fortune, she falls in love with one of the Hawthorne brothers, resulting in conflicts between the rest of the family.
In The Final Gambit, a member of the Hawthorne family gets abducted by Tobias Hawthorne’s former rival, and Avery and the Hawthorne brothers must solve mysteries to try to rescue him. Meanwhile, an unexpected visitor shows up at the Hawthorne House which uncovers even more information about Tobias Hawthorne’s mysterious past. While Avery learns about Tobias Hawthorne, his character is revealed and the visitor’s trust is questioned as Avery realizes who the visitor really is. Tobias Hawthorne’s former rival, who knows that Avery inherited the fortune, threatens her position at the Hawthorne House as she continues to solve the mysteries surrounding the Hawthorne family. After preventing her enemies from stealing the billions of dollars she was left with, Avery inherits her fortune and must figure out what to do with the money.
Overall, The Final Gambit is an incredibly interesting novel with new mysteries being solved in every chapter. It builds upon the plot of the first two books in The Inheritance Games trilogy, deepening the storyline of the series and concluding with all of the mysteries throughout the books being solved. I highly recommend this novel because I love the development of the characters throughout the series but suggest that you read the entire series in rapid succession because it is hard to remember the complex storylines throughout the trilogy.
