The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood (3/5)

The Handmaid's Tale can be a complicated book read but may be enjoyable if you are patient. The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel by author Margaret Atwood. It was published in 1985. It is set in the far future, in a very patriarchal state. The state is known as the Republic of Gilead, and it has overthrown the United States government. Offred is a Handmaid in Gilead and is one of the first generations of people to remember “before”. She finds herself using her smarts and voice that the state tries to silence to help her escape the state and find her husband and child so she can continue her life from “before.” The book definitely has a lot of different themes but may be gorey for some people and younger readers. The book takes a long time to have anything happen in it so you may find yourself ⅓ into the book but nothing has really happened at all. This book was okay. I’m glad I read it, but I’m also glad it’s over. It is a complicated read so I would suggest this book to someone who has the time and patience to really get into this book and try to understand the deeper meaning.
