The Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is an adventure fiction novel about a boy named Brian who is stranded in the forest with nothing but a small hatchet. The book starts off with Brian saying goodbye to his mother and later boarding a small plane with just himself and the pilot in order to go visit his father in the Canadian wilderness. After some time in the plane, the pilot suffers from a heart attack and the plane crashes into a lake in the middle of the forest. Brian survived the crash with some minor injuries but the pilot, however, was not so lucky and died. Brian, with the hatchet his mother had given him before the plane took off, learned how to survive in the Canadian forests for more than 50 days. Throughout his time in the woods, he suffers from starvation and dehydration and learns to fend off wild animals like bears. He is able to assemble his own shelter and survive until his eventual rescue after he turns on a radio transmitter he found in the plane wreck and is saved by a pilot that lands a hydroplane on the lake of the initial crash. In my opinion, this book was very entertaining and was fun to read. This book keeps the reader wanting to know what happens next and it delivers a satisfying response to any questions or wonders the reader might have. Overall I think this book is full of adventure and is definitely worth it to read.
