Angie Thoman wrote the book The Hate You Give which became the #1 New York Bestseller! The book has received many awards for addressing racism in a historic-fiction way. The book is mainly about the two worlds we live in. The privileged versus the poor. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter, the main character, lives in a poor “black area.” However, her parents wanted to give her the best education possible so Starr attends a private school for the rich kids. One day, Starr and her best friend, Khalil went on a drive at night. Then, blue and red lights start to flash before them. Both were unarmed and were questioned by the police even though they did nothing wrong. At that moment, the police pull out a firearm and shoot Khalil in front of Starr. After the death of Khalil, she has began to see backlash and hears the cruel words of the world. The words tore up Khalil’s image. Only seeing the bad parts of him such as drug dealing which he did to provide for his family. Starr learns the importance of speaking up for change, to stop the endless cycle of African Americans dying due to policemen. As the reader, I loved the book and the movie that came out a couple of years later. The book gives the perspective of the world we live in. How the news controls the minds of society. Whatever says goes, right? We say “All men are equal” and yet we see racism occurring frequently with no reaction as if we are so numb to this fact. In the future, we shall hope that the media will change the images of people with color. The problem must be addressed as nowadays people have created protests such as ALM or BLM to speak up for those whose voices are silenced by the media. We should do our part and attend these protests. The book is an easy way to learn about the racism people face on a daily without anyone noticing. Additionally, people should watch the movie, The Hate You Give after reading the book!
