This book takes place in a fantasy world where a group of dwarves along with a wizard and a hobbit named Bilbo who is the main protagonist venture out to find treasure. In their adventure they first spot a group of trolls who would happily eat them. The dwarves and Bilbo are famished and the wizard has left for some time so Bilbo, who is excellent at stealth, attempts to steal some of their supplies. He ultimately failed and he along with the dwarves were captured then to be saved by the wizard who had returned and turned the trolls to stone. The wizard later leaves them, though, when they reach the foot of the mountain, where they must traverse across to the other side. While crossing the mountain they are captured by goblins who live in the mountains. The others escape while Bilbo steals a ring from a creature named “Gollum” which can make the wearer turn invisible. He uses the ring to escape the goblins and doesn’t tell the others of the ring. Later once they cross the mountain they get in a battle with goblins but they are saved by eagles who bring them to their kingdom and set them on their way. Further down the road the leader of the crowd, Thorin, is captured just before an ambush from Wood-Elves who capture all of them but Bilbo who follows them and finds that the others had been imprisoned. After a very long time of thinking and wondering about, Bilbo with the use of the One Ring and his stealth was able to save all the dwarves including Thorin by stealing a key from one of the guards. Once free they hop into barrels that are rolled down river by the wood elves down to a place on the water called Lake Town. Thorin convinces the residents that he is the “King Under The Mountain” and they later set off to their final destination to steal the treasure from the dragon, Smaug in the Lonely Mountain. Upon finally trying to steal the treasure they awaken the earlier sleeping dragon who traps them in the mountain for a long time. A long time later, they finally escape. The group says their goodbyes and Bilbo returns to his home. At first I thought the book would be boring and just about people walking in a forest but I grew to like this book and think that it is a great start to the lord of the rings series. Anyways I think this book was great and I really enjoyed it and think others would too.
