The book revolves around Linus Baker, a 40 year old case worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, or DICOMY for short. Basically, the organization helps to manage magical beings, who are orphans. Baker lives a very quiet, “lonely” life with his cat, Calliope, until he is summoned by the “Extreme Upper Management”. They assign him a highly classified assignment, he must travel to Marsyas Island Orphanage. He is met with 6 magical and dangerous orphans: Phee, Theodore, Chauncey, Talia, Sal, and of course-- Lucy (short for Lucifer). The head of the orphanage? Mr. (Arthur) Parnassus with the assistance and help of the islands’ sprite, Zoe. So why is overseeing this orphanage highly classified? Throughout the book, Baker discovers secrets of the building and is faced with the decision, either watch the world burn, or destroy the home.
I liked this book because it’s oddly reminiscent of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Not only that, but the book is very “down to Earth” or very slice-of-life like with heavy topics that TJ Klune is able to weave into the book. The book centers around Linus and unravels as he tries to understand the residents of the orphanage. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a wholesome, full of comedic moments, and sometimes bittersweet book.
