In The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen and her sister Primrose live in district 12. After a catastrophic event, the world has evolved into a capital and 13 districts. Each district has a job to fulfill to provide the capital with something that is necessary to survive. The capital is very controlling and the 13th district decided that enough is enough and that they were going to rebel. They decided to try and fight the capital and lost miserably. They bombed all of district 13 and there is known to be nothing left. Since the uprising, the capital decided that they needed to create a sort of ‘game’ for the districts to play against one another to remind everyone what will happen if they decide to stand up against the capital. So every year the districts go through a ‘reaping’ where they select one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts to fight to the death in the hunger games. The children that get chosen are between the ages of twelve and eighteen and every year their name gets thrown into the reaping pot once more. If any families are struggling they can opt to add their child's name in more times for a bigger ration of food and necessary materials. Katniss Everdeen who is sixteen at the time has her name in the reaping twenty times, while her sister Prim only twelve has her name in one time. They attend the reaping of the seventy-fourth hunger games and the ladies' names are called first, Prim is called. Katniss is overcome with anger and confusion and volunteers in her sister's place to go into the hunger games. The boys' names are called and Peeta Mellark is chosen, a boy who saved Katniss from starving when she was young. Now Katniss and Peeta have to leave district twelve and all of the family that they have to go to the capital and compete in the games to death with only one survivor. I love this book, it is definitely in my top three that I have ever read. I think that it always keeps you wondering what is going to happen next. You get to imagine the characters and see them evolve and grow throughout the book. I loved how I could connect to the characters and feel a sense of welcome from many of them. It allowed me to have an emotional connection to each of the characters, helping me always want to keep reading. I felt that there was always something interesting happening and it is hard to stop myself from reading more. To anyone that reads this book, I would recommend that you take your time and enjoy it. Try to create emotional ties with the character and makeup what they look like. Create a sense of trying to guess their next move and be surprised by the outcomes. I would also recommend going to watch the movie version of this book and all of the series that continue because it just makes this amazing book that much better.
