The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (5/5)

For my Book review, I decided to read the book “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins. It is a great fiction read, and has a prominent them`e of love and making sacrifices for family and friends. Katniss, a 16-year old living in the poorest district in all of Panem, district 12,  is a very strong, courageous young girl. She illegally hunts in a forest behind her fenced in district, using a bow and arrows from her father who passed away in a mining accident. Katniss and her best friend Gale poach animals, which they then sell on the black market to make enough money to support their families. After a war won by the capitol of Panem against the districts, the wealthy capitol citizens came up with a way to remind the districts of the capitols power over them. Every year each district sends one male and female tribute, reaped from all 12-28 years old living in the district, to compete in fight to the death for the capital citizens amusement. All 24 tributes are sent into an arena where they are forced to fight one another in order to be the last one standing, which they are then sent back home to a life of ease, and riches. When Katniss’s younger sister, Prim, is chosen to compete, Katniss volunteers to take her place, and be sent to the hunger games. The male tribute from her district, Peeta, turns out to be a boy who saved her life many years ago when she almost starved to death. As the two go through many trials in the games together, Katniss begins to form feelings for Peeta, who has had a crush on her his whole life. They both make tremendous sacrifices for one another as well as for their families, even if it means risking their lives. I loved this book because it combined a love story with an action packed, dystopian story line, unlike any book I have ever read before! I also feel like the author's display of issues such as people having too much power over others, made me think of our society, and the government we live under. This book also had similar scenarios to the book “A Night Divided,” where characters were forced to break laws in order to protect their families. I think the book relates to the larger issue that sometimes people can do cruel things for the purpose of entertainment, and it can get out of hand. All in all I think this book shows a true meaning of love even through difficult circumstances, as well as makes readers think deeper about one main issue in our world about how far people will go to entertain themselves as well as others.
