Sal is in his last year of high school before he has to go to college. He and his best friend Sam navigate the school year, encountering monumental changes. From first fights to first griefs, Sal supports his friends and vice versa while discovering his true self. He realizes that change is inevitable and that he needs to accept them.
This is a very well-written book. The language Saenz uses conveys feelings that readers can instantly recognize and relate to themselves. As Sal’s world turns upside down, Saenz clearly expounds on the confusion and mourning that the characters experience.
I really enjoyed this novel. When I picked it up, it was hard to put it down. For readers who don’t like grief, this book might not be for them. However, I believe that it is a great read that satisfyingly showcases a slice of life.
