The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey (4/5)

The Infinite Sea, written by Rick Yancey, is the second book in the trilogy. It starts following the events of the first book The Fifth Wave. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where aliens have sent waves of attacks to kill the human race. The fifth wave of attacks involves Silencers which are humans with an alien consciousness downloaded into their brain, who track down humans and kill them.

The main characters Cassie, Ben, Sammy, Ringer, Dumbo, Teacup, and Poundcake have just escaped Camp Haven after blowing it up. Camp Haven was a base created by the aliens to train humans to be soldiers and trick them into killing other humans. Now they are living in a hotel a few miles away. Ringer decides to go look for a better place to wait out the winter. After she leaves, Teacup secretly decides to follow Ringer into the woods. Not knowing it was Teacup, Ringer accidentally shoots her friend. Then, Ringer sees choppers coming and they take Ringer and Teacup to a new camp. While there, the aliens inject Ringer with microscopic robots in a procedure called The Twelfth System. The enhancement increases strength, speed, and endurance. After the procedure she gets really sick and has to stay in bed for months. While there, she makes friends with a guy called Razor, who was her caretaker and they made a plan to escape. Ringer fights her way out and finds Teacup while Razor kidnaped a pilot, and they were able to escape in a helicopter. Then planes start following them so Razor jumps out with Teacup, and Ringer stays behind to pilot the helicopter. She kills the engines and jumps out of the helicopter where she falls into a lake. She finds Razor and he tells her that he left Teacup in a warehouse and that he will take her there. When she gets there, she figures out that Razor is actually working for Vosch, who was the commander of Camp Haven. Vosch reveals that the Silencers are actually just enhanced humans who have been downloaded with a program to make them think they are aliens. After Ringer heals from the injuries of the helicopter crash, she and Razor are returned back to one of the alien bases. Razor helps Ringer to escape and she is able to jump through a window.

During all this, back at the hotel Evan found Cassie and the others. Evan is a Silencer who became friends with the group in the hotel. Shortly after, a little girl shows up. Evan tells them that the aliens have put a device in the girl's throat that can detect small changes in CO2 levels, and was sent to blow them up, but they are able to take the device out of her. Grace, a Silencer tracking Evan because he decided to side with the humans, shows up at the hotel. They were able to escape, but had to leave Evan and Poundcake behind, who were injured. Poundcake sacrifices himself by breathing onto the bomb to blow up the hotel and Grace with it.

This book was really interesting because it explores a world in which the alien’s reason for destroying humanity isn’t quite clear yet. This story was really good and I can’t wait to read the final book in the trilogy. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends.
