The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (5/5)

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes begins with an average high school student, much like yourself. She attends her classes and tries her best to work for a better future for herself and her sister. Then one day, Avery’s whole life changes. She is summoned to attend the reading of the will of a billionaire she has never met. Much to her and everyone else’s surprise, Avery inherits the bulk of the fortune, his mansion, his football team, and so much more, leaving his immediate family with close to nothing. They are immediately suspicious, but so is she. What’s more, she is required under the contract of the will to stay in the mansion for a full year, all with the family of the billionaire still living there. The book follows her thrilling, danger-filled adventure around the twists and turns of the billionaire’s property as Avery tries to uncover the reason for everything.

This book was a masterpiece. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and couldn’t put it down- I finished it in three days! It was the perfect amount of mystery, leaving many clues to the reader while not at all being too obvious. The characters were loveable and endearing, all with their own quirks and flaws. There’s a little bit of romance, but it by no means overshadows the plot and actually contributes to one of the many plot twists hidden in this novel.

All-in-all, I loved The Inheritance Games. If you’re even thinking you want to read it, definitely do! If you liked the movie “Knives Out,” this novel follows the same theme while being a great book independently as well.
