The Last Smile in Sunder City By Luke Arnold (4/5)

The Last Smile in Sunder City is set in a fantasy world where magic has been drained, leaving the world in despair. The story focuses on Fetch Philips, a grumpy and depressed private investigator who refuses to take cases from whoever can afford his services. He used to be a hopeful go-getting person, but after the magic was drained, he became sad and lost in a chase for purpose. Fetch is haunted by the thoughts and memories of when the world blossomed with magic, contrasted by the impoverished world, where magical creatures are disregarded. Fetch’s adventure kicks off when he is hired to investigate the murder of an elf, a race that thrives off magic.  As Fetch gets further and further into this case, he uncovers deep secrets and conspiracies that make him question the fate of magic in this world. His journey through this case also forces him to confront his fears and the person he has become. He is forced to reflect upon the painful events that have led him to this point in his life. The book explores themes like depression and loss and the recovery and comeback that can be made, even if continuing seems impossible. This story made me think back in my past to tough moments, and issues that still plague me to this day. It was a good read and touched on some important topics in society and different approaches to these issues and conflicts. Making Fetch a down-in-the-dumps private investigator gives the feel of a classic sloppy and seemingly unqualified detective that we all love while using him to represent these rather somber topics is quite a good way to capture the reader's attention with what almost seems like a comedy, and mystery mixed. If you plan on reading this, go into it with an open mind, and be prepared for unexpected events that make you think over your life, and your choices. You should also be ready to be compelled to read the rest of the trilogy like I was, since I could not get enough of this author's captivating writing.
