In the book Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Percy is just a regular kid who is struggling with school. He has ADHD and dyslexia. Percy is on a field trip to a Museum, when he attacks a human and is brought to the side by his teacher. His teacher however turns out to be a monster and attacks him, however he is saved. After this many strange things continue to happen including meeting 3 strange old women and questioning who he is. Sally, Percy’s mom, realizes this takes him away to the beach for the weekend. However, in the middle of their vacation Grover, a satyr, comes to their house and tells Sally Percy needs to go to Camp Half-Blood, a camp full of demigod humans like him. A storm occurs and when a minotaur attacks them Percy is forced to flee to camp Half-Blood. In camp Half-Blood Percy discovers his father is Poseidon. It is forbidden for the 3 major gods; Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades to have children due to the fact that their children are too powerful. As a result, his existence causes a stir in Olympus, the city of the gods. Furthermore, When someone steals Zeus’s lightning bolt and Percy is blamed he sets out on a quest to retrieve the bolt and stop the war between the gods. He is sent with Annabeth, daughter of Athena, and Grover, a satyr. They travel across the United States until they go west and meet Hades in the underworld. They find out that Ares, the god of War, was the rebellious god and finds Zeus' lightning bolt in a backpack given to him by Ares. Percy returns the bolt to Zeus and meets his dad for the first time. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover later return to camp Half-blood and keep training. This book was one of my best reads. The author used great foreshadowing and mystery throughout the book when it came to things like who stole the lightning bolt and Percy’s relationship with his father. The unity of Annabeth and Percy despite the rivalries of their parents hinted at working together despite differences for a common goal. In conclusion, everything about this book is perfect. The ending was not too predictable and the constant changing plot made it a great read. The themes of friendship, working together, and identity throughout the book give great insights and make the book intriguing. If you like Greek mythology, definitely give this a read.
