The story The Lovely Bones, a fantasy young-adult novel, follows the aftermath of the narrator’s death. Susie Salmon, a young girl murdered at fourteen, spectates her family and friends as they try to cope with and grieve her death. As time continues, suspicions grow, paranoia festers, and relationships break. I was captivated by how the characters interact, and how they grow from tragedy. Author Alice Sebold perfectly illustrates the grieving process in that you feel the anguish of Susie’s loved ones. I advise readers to take it slow and pace the book to thoroughly connect with the characters.
