The Maid

The Maid by Nita Prose is about a maid named Molly Gray who works at the Regency Grand Hotel. She cleans people’s rooms when one day, she finds an infamous guest dead on his bed. Due to her abnormal behavior and inability to develop social skills, she is targeted as the main suspect. A messy murder mystery unfolds where she finds people who have more sympathy towards her behavior and people who want to take her as an advantage.

Molly struggles through life, especially since her Grandmother died a few months ago. But no matter, she still throws herself into the hotel. Her unique character shows her love of proper etiquette and cleanliness. Wearing her crisp uniform and filling her cart with miniature soaps and bottles.

I found this book after joining a book club through the library and was able to not only talk about the book to other people I got to meet the author and get more in-depth with it. I love a good murder mystery and this book takes it even further with a different intake on it than your regular average murder mystery. Most of the people I have talked with have said the main character was neurodivergent and can’t figure out people’s social skills or social cues. This makes the plot thicker and shows us a different perspective on how much a maid knows and can do.

I enjoyed the book. It was fun trying to piece everything together and seeing Molly’s perspective on being neurodivergent. I also noticed while reading the author purposely left some details and spots that will leave you to wonder using your imagination.

The end of the book surprised me completely by changing the whole plot twist, but it worked well with the story and left me with a smile. The book shows us how to not underestimate someone or take anyone for granted they know more than you think. If you love murder mystery with a different twist to it this book would be perfect. I can’t wait to see more from the author and Molly!
