The Maze Runner By James Dashner (4/5)

James Dashner’s The Maze Runner Is a dystopian science fiction novel that follows the life of the main character Thomas. The Novel begins with Thomas waking up on a mysterious platform with no recollection of who he was or what he was doing there. The platform then Rises up and he meets the Gladers, the citizens of the Glade. The Glade is the center of a labyrinth that contains the Gladers against their wills. The Glade has a door that opens to the labyrinth every morning and closes every night. The Gladers have elected the fastest and strongest to become their runners, the runners go into the Labyrinth everyday mapping it and trying to find a way out while avoiding the many dangers that inhabit it. My favorite part of the novel was the mysterious and scary tone that the book sets early on. Much of the book is filled with speculation and theories of what the maze is, who is controlling the maze, and why they are there. Another strong point of the novel is the variety in character personalities and traits. One of my most favorite characters was Chuck, Chuck is the youngest of the group and by far the friendliest. He helps to create a better sense of comradeship between the individuals in the group and is constantly the friendliest person towards Thomas, always being there to help when Thomas is in trouble with the group. Another topic that I think the novel executes well are the monsters found inside of the maze, called Grievers. The author did a good job in deciding when and where to implement the Grievers, Dashner doesn't over use the Grievers in the story, only using them when necessary. Instead the author uses the main and side characters against themselves creating secrecy and separation at the right times. Although there are many Strongpoints in the novel there are a few problems that I have found. One was the lack of information the reader receives at the end of the book not resolving many of the questions the reader still has. In conclusion, The Maze Runner Is a great read for people interested in a dystopian mysterious novel and I greatly recommend it to anyone interested in it.
