The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey (5/5)

Molly F.

A 12 year old boy named Will Henry is living with his father’s boss, Doctor Pellinore Warthrop because his parents died in a fire. The doctor studies, hunts, and kills monsters, called Anthropophagi. Will and a few other people help him kill these monsters, and they find out that they are not native to America. They go to the Anthropophagi pods to kill them, but the alpha female escapes and they are forced to go in. After they finish, they find the man who carried the Anthropophagi to America, and he tells them how they got there. Will then catches the disease that his father had at his time of death, but the worms inside him actually make him live longer. He lives to over a hundred, and when his journals are discovered, the full story is as well. I feel that the book is interesting, and it keeps you on your toes. You never know what is going to happen next with the hunters and the Anthropophagi. It is a bit dark and has some imagery of violence and gore, so if you don’t like that type of thing, then maybe this isn’t a good read for you, but personally, I enjoy that type of stuff. The author mentions that people can sometimes even be more harmful than monsters, and I agree with this. As humans, we are capable of empathy, yet some people have none, just like Dr. Kerns, the Anthropophagi hunter. He kills a young woman after using her as bait, knowing this is an act of evil. The Anthropophagi are not capable of empathy; they kill people because it is their natural instinct. This can relate to the real world, such as the elementary school shooting that happened in Texas on May 24, 2022. The 18 year old man was capable of empathizing with the children and their parents, and how afraid they would be, but still killed 21 people – 19 of which were young kids. These two people are very similar, and that's what the author was saying: that sometimes humans can be more dangerous and destructive than monsters. This book is very interesting, and a good read for those who like suspense, action, and don’t mind gore or violence. For future readers, the first few pages might be a bit hard to get through, but trust me, it gets better.
