The One, is the third book in the fictional series, The Selection, that teaches us that our differences make us unique and capable of success. The main character, America continues to compete for Prince Maxon’s heart. She encounters many people who don’t believe that she can win Prince Maxon’s heart because she is of a lower caste than the rest of the competitors. As she faces obstacles, America discovers her true self and what makes her happy, and everything falls into place.
The One was a motivating and romantic read. Throughout the book, I agree with Keira Cass's ideas. She says that it is acceptable to be different and that we are not less eligible because of our differences. This is very important for our world today, especially young adults and teenagers because we all think that we have to “fit in,” but if we are all the same then we will not have our own qualities that make up our personalities. I think this book relates to the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee because in both books we see how someone is not accepted because of their differences. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson is seen as guilty at his trial even though he is innocent because of his race, and in The One, America is seen as unfit for the crown because she comes from a lower caste.
This book was very engaging with the reader. The author helped the reader to see that differences are accepted and that they are what make each of us special. I really liked this book, and I would highly recommend it to readers who love romance novels.
