The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster (4/5)

The overall theme of this book is how boredom is a natural experience and an obstacle in the path of everybody. It also is about how education can be yearning for some people and difficult to comprehend for others. The third theme that is explored is the common sense of solving various problems. The book begins with a boy named Milo a child that is always experiencing boredom in life and has no motivation or intuition in doing anything useful in his life. Then, Milo had an idea that might cure his boredom. He drove his car into a tollbooth and instantly teleported to a city ruled by a king where all the citizens have a peculiar way with words that fascinates him. After this, he then enters a place called Dictionoplois. In this place, there are many arguments that take place based on the diction and language of various scriptures that are read in this book. On his way to catch a place to rest he meets some friendly and foolish people named Humbug and Tock. Together they go through many adventures that help them mature, especially with Milo with his tendency to always goof around and not take anything seriously. Eventually, even though they are maturing they still make mistakes which leads them to get arrested and go to jail. They escape the prison and make their way back to the city and surprisingly are still welcomed.

I think that this book is very memorable because it covers the idea and focuses on the genre of young adults which many people deeply enjoy. To add on, I agree with the author’s opinion that learning is vital and boredom can easily be overcome. The book shows the possibility that boredom is curable in many ways, but it fails to go in-depth about this. This book relates to Roald Dahls' writing as it explores various fictional situations. Last but not least, This book affected me because it made me realize that once you sense boredom you can easily cure it in a few steps.

All in all, I think that this is a great book for young readers as it explores the different cures to boredom. It also shows young adults how education is very important and that they should persevere in their life.
