The Princess Bride by William Goldman (5/5)

The Princess Bride by William Goldman, originally published in the United States and published in 1973, is a fictional fantasy, comedy, and romantic novel. William Goldman's novels are often forgotten because of his film industry work, including The Princess Bride. But, Goldman novels like The Princess Bride, Lord of The Flies, and The Inheritors, are all brilliant and they will all take you on quite the adventure, especially The Princess Bride. This adventure in particular includes a beautiful farm girl and her true love. Her true love must reunite with her after a long separation. But kidnapping, forced marriages, and pirates will not make it easy for them. During the course of this adventure, she will encounter a variety of characters including Vizzini- a criminal who will do anything for gold, Fezzik- the gentle giant, Spaniard- a great swordsman, and the evil mastermind behind it all. Throughout the book, we will see how loyalty is a big theme and how it carries on in several characters in their own way. This novel is extremely memorable because it was just one of the funniest books I have read. Almost every night, I would lay in bed trying to fall asleep but I would just end up with my flashlight on, under my covers, trying to make out the letters on the pages. Unlike any other book, this book made me laugh which I will always remember. One of the main things that stood out to me was the famous quotes that even my dad was able to say even though he had read the book ages ago. Even though this novel creates a near impossible/fairy-tale like world, the author still makes it seem so believable. Another important detail is that the story is a story inside a story. The author narrates the story himself and tells the story of how he never liked the book, to begin with but as he got older, he read it on his own and realized how great of a book it was. The only thing I would say is that the book has some sexual references and so I would wait until you are a tween and older to read this novel. All in all, this daredevil story takes us on a roller coaster that will make you want to read more. There is actually no reason not to read it at all.
