The Queen’s Assassin is a romance-fantasy duology where main character Shadow escapes the grasp of castle politics in favor of seeking well known assassin Caledon Holt. Shadow helps Cal escape prison, and they go on an adventure to a nearby country in order to arrest a person suspected of plotting the death of their Queen. As the two get closer, an unexpected romance blooms between them and makes their quest more and more dangerous. Throughout their journey, Cal and Shadow uncover more of the truth. They learn of the web of lies and secrets that hide underneath the regal throne that could destroy everything they have ever known. The introduction to both of the main characters is very well written. As I was reading, I was looking forward to the chapters from Cal’s POV; however the first few chapters, from Shadow’s POV, are incredible. The writing of Shadow’s teenage, young adult mindset and personality is very accurate. I quite enjoyed this book because of the slow realization from both characters of their attraction to one another as well as the plot twisting mystery towards the end. Admittedly, the ending shocked me a fair amount. Usually I can see these things coming but this book kept me on the edge of my seat for so long. I also did not expect Shadow’s powers in the beginning and I loved how they grew throughout the novel as she learned more about herself and was put in more selfless positions. I have never read a book quite like this one before, the premise of this kind of blood oath with a power filled and determined protagonist mixed with all of the dirty secrets and plots hidden just inside the palace walls. I am now on the hunt for a book with this kind of creativity, execution, and suspense. I would definitely recommend this book. It is thrilling, romantic, and shocking, all the best ingredients for a good book. This is the kind of book someone gets all comfy for and reads in one sitting. I am so excited to read the sequel and follow Shadow and Cal on their journeys and adventures through the court, their relationship, and their positions in secret guild.
