The Scorch Trials by James Dashner (4/5)

After escaping the Maze and being rescued and brought to safety, Thomas and the rest of the Gladers find themselves being fed and taken care of by a group rebelling against WICKED, the organization that created the Maze. They are brought to a safe haven where they are given dormitories, one for all the boys and one for the girl, Teresa. While lying in bed waiting to fall asleep, Thomas and Teresa share their thoughts using their telepathy abilities. After a short conversation, they both fall asleep. However, in the middle of the night, Thomas wakes up to Teresa, claiming that she feels something is wrong. They both fall back to sleep. In the morning, Thomas awakes to chaos in the boys’ dormitory. Crazy people, called Cranks, are screaming at the boys behind bars in their room. Thomas and the other Gladers head to the main room to search for Teresa but are met with lifeless bodies hanging from the ceiling. They edge around the bodies and into Teresa’s room, but she is nowhere to be found. Instead, a young boy named Aris is in her place. After a while, they all head back into the main room and find that the bodies have disappeared. They also realize that all the people who had helped and cared for them the day before had all vanished. A couple of hours later, the Gladers are exhausted from the lack of food and water, and they all lie on the floor. Suddenly, food and water appear in the center of the main room, and the Gladers are amazed. They all quickly take advantage of the magical food stash, and while no one is looking, an old and mysterious man appears in the room. He is sitting at a desk while reading his book. Thomas aggressively approaches him and demands an explanation for the chaos they had awoken to, but the man ignores him. Thomas continues approaching him but instead bumps into a force field surrounding and protecting the man. The Gladers have no choice except to wait. Eventually, the man speaks and explains what the boys have to do. He says that at 6 am the next day, they are to enter through a portal. The portal will take them to the Scorch Trials, where they have two weeks to travel north and reach the safe haven. The man then states that he is part of the WICKED organization and leaves. The Gladers are left confused but accept their fate and prepare for the next day. The next day at exactly 6 am, the portal opens, and they step through.

The story continues with the Gladers traveling towards the safe haven while encountering multiple obstacles. I really enjoyed this book because dystopian adventure novels always fascinated me. I recommend this book to anyone looking for an engaging story with lots of action and unexpected twists.
