The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (4/5)

How would you feel if everyone told you that you had killed your mother. Lily was always told this. Since a child, she had been told that her mother was trying to leave her. However, Lily did not believe this. She felt as if she were a bee escaping a jar, or in her case, escaping her abusive father T Ray. Accompanied by her housemaid Rosaline, she set off on an adventure to find out the truth of her mother's death and to discover if her mother truly was trying to leave. She notices a statue of Black Mary with her mother in her photo. After seeing a picture of a Black Mary statue on a honey jar, she set off to the honey farm to find out more about her mother. She discovers that her mother had once lived at the farm, and that 3 sisters, May June and August are living there. They have their own form of Christianity revolving around the Black Mary statue. It is here that Lily learns the truth about her mother. This book was very good at expressing Lily’s emotions throughout the story. An example of this was how Kidd wrote about the bees escaping the jar, and how Lily is compared to these bees. Lily also wants to escape and set off on a journey to find the truth about her mother. I also like this book because it is inspiring and shows the resilience of African Americans throughout the story. This book was very good and is a calm read, preferably before bed or in a quiet place. I recommend this book to people that like calm stories that do not have too much action. I do not recommend this book to people that enjoy action-packed adventure or fiction books.
