The Selection by Kiera Cass (5/5)

The book, The Selection, by Kiera Cass is a fictional romance novel that teaches us that our status in life does not define us. America Singer is a young, beautiful girl, from a lower caste, who is presented with the chance to be a part of the prestigious competition, The Selection, to compete to be Prince Maxon’s wife. There is only one problem; she does not want to enter. For the main character, America, this competition means leaving her family and ruining her relationship with her secret boyfriend, Aspen. However, at the palace Prince Maxon and America become good friends and much more.

The Selection was a captivating and delightful read. I agree with what Kiera Cass is trying to tell us throughout the story. She emphasizes that no matter what your economic background is, a person can still be successful. Cass pulls multiple issues into the book that occur even in our world today, including starving families and the lack of education for poor people. These issues definitely need to be addressed and changed for the good of humanity. I could see a connection with the views of Sandra Cisneros, the author of The House on Mango Street, and Kiera Cass because both believe that the education system for poorer groups should be stronger. The book helped me to reflect on our world today and see what I can do to make it a better place.

The book kept me wanting to read page after page. The author helps the reader realize that you can achieve anything you want regardless of your standing. It recognized some major issues making readers think of how they can better their world. I would definitely recommend this book.
