Following a design of a sort of dystopian society, The Selection demonstrates a society in which people are dominated by their class ranking. Depending on what caste you fall under, your job and therefore income and what you can do with your life are decided for you. The Selection follows the plot of a girl from a caste five, family either known as performers. America Singer has been selected out of thirty-five girls for an opportunity of a lifetime. Those who are selected no matter their ranking have a chance to rise in society and not only open up opportunities for themselves but also for their family. Unlike most girls who were selected America is quite upset about this selection due to the fact, that she must leave her lover Aspen behind and win another’s affections. The thirty-five selected are led to the castle to compete for Prince Maxon’s affections and in turn, become number one. So I suppose the real question is will America fight or purposely strikeout in an effort to return to caste six lover?
Honestly, I found this to be a very thought-provoking book. What would happen if our fates were determined by what casting we fall under? My mind was on overload with questions about what could happen. As more and more girls were sent home, I kept questioning what a world that was co-ruled by someone that came from such poor roots would look like. How would this change the royal's perspective on their society? And in turn, would this change their ways of dealing with their society? Maybe it will, but since her story isn’t over yet all we can do is read and find out.
For a truly terrific story, you have to be a terrific reader. Ask questions and let the pages inspire you to have a new perspective on yourself and the world around you. Do you ever feel that where you stand in society and what your parents do influences what you can become? I always believe a good book should provoke curiosity in a reader and in order to do that it needs to have a lasting impact. It needs to say things that not only make you question how you are but how other people are too. This book does all of that and more and I truly recommend you let every page and detail sink in and open your mind to all of its societal flaws and beauties. And most importantly have fun and enjoy the story!
