The Selection by Kiera Cass (5/5)

America Singer is a five, Aspen is a six. The both of them have been sneaking out past curfew to a treehouse in her backyard for the past 2 years, but have kept their relationship a secret. If America were to marry Aspen she would be moved down to be a six and would have to give up her line of work. As fives, their career options involve being singers, artists, or musicians, while sixes are often housekeepers to seamstresses. They are all placed into a caste system with it ranging from the highest at one to the lowest at eight. But there is a contest that winning it would bring you up to one, which is royal status. America is not interested in it though as every girl in the country is vying to be one of the thirty-five selected to compete in the competition which entails winning the prince's love. America’s mother bribes her with the chance to have her own money by just entering and she agrees to do so. With her newfound money, she decides to surprise Aspen, however, his reaction is not what she expected. As he feels bad for not being able to provide for her and breaks up with America. A devastated America is shocked when she is selected and is caught up in a whirlwind of rules to prepare for the competition. Upon arriving she is overwhelmed by all the girls and homesickness, running to the garden she is stopped by the guards. But Prince Maxon happens to be passing by and allows her access to the garden. He follows her to check on her and America reveals she is only there to receive the money for participating and the food. He asks her to keep their meeting a secret from the other girls to keep them from getting jealous and she agrees. The two eventually decide to create an alliance to allow America to receive the money and Prine Maxon to get inside information about the girls.

The selection is an interesting book that I enjoyed. The book is a series and the other books are just as good as this one. The love triangle between America, Aspen, and Maxon is exciting and the plot is captivating.
