The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, is a novel that follows the life of movie star, Evelyn Hugo as she rises to fame. The novel describes all of the world-shattering events that occurred behind closed doors, which were some of the few events that were never made public by the paparazzi. The novel starts with unknown journalist, Monique Grant receiving an interview request from Evelyn. When Monique arrives at Evelyn’s home, Monique learns that Evelyn wants her to write her biography. Evelyn wants to share her story with Monique so that she can finally control the narrative and share the truth about her relationships with the public.
Evelyn Hugo was an A-list movie star who rose to fame in the 50s until her retirement in the 80s. Evelyn Hugo grew up in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan with dreams of leaving that life behind and becoming a Hollywood sensation. Evelyn’s ambition and strategic mind help propels her to stardom. She is not afraid to do whatever it takes to be known as one of the greatest Hollywood actresses. No matter what kind of problems or rumors Evelyn faces, she always manages to make things work out. The novel is not solely about a woman who married many men. It is also about a headstrong woman who relentlessly fights her way through the tumultuous waters of Hollywood to become one of the greatest actresses of all time.
I had heard about this book before, but I didn’t decide to read it until it was recommended to me by a friend. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it because it didn’t seem like an exciting book, but I am glad I read it because it is an extremely well-written novel. The author creates a variety of complex characters with intricate backgrounds, which helps each reader see themselves as a different character. As the story progresses, the readers connect with the character, and they feel the heartbreak and joy the characters are experiencing. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read a mesmerizing story about a tenacious woman who learns about the loss that comes with power while dealing with her love.
