The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (5/5)

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo revolves around the life of Hugo herself, a celebrity who has lived through show business in the 50s and all the way to the 80s when she finally left. This moving story follows the interview of Hugo at her late age in the year 2017. Monique Grant, the interviewer, grows close to Evelyn as more is slowly revealed about her incredible life and the truth behind the walls she’s built over the decades. However, it’s a mystery to Monique Grant why she was offered the job; she was picked specifically by Hugo, even though she had no real fame or fortune, like many other qualified interviewers. Intrigued by the offer, Grant proceeds to follow Evelyn’s timeline using her most infamous achievement (her seven husbands), to follow a tale of blooming friendships and an undying ambition that kept Evelyn going until the bitter end, no matter how hard it was to handle the stardom. When I first started this book, I didn’t expect much; originally, I believed it was to be a cheesy story, fantasizing about the life of Hollywood stars and the exciting drama that follows. Thankfully, I was extremely surprised as the story surpassed my expectations in every way. Evelyn’s feelings are raw and evoking; her character enrages you, yet you adore her every choice and decision. The characters are very three-dimensional and while you follow their story, you learn about the harshness of fame and the constant issues that come with it. In conclusion, the story and characters of this book pleasantly surprised me and moved me in a way that I would never expect. Evelyn’s ways of expressing love are heart-shattering but believable. Her love stories throughout the book are emotional and have constant twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page. For future readers looking for new book suggestions, I highly recommend reading this book, as it was a story that will forever change my perspective of others, specifically celebrities dealing with the struggles of fame. But I also recommend bringing a box of tissues, because this story is a tear-jerker!
