“Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect, until…” (Michaelides) Most murder mysteries begin with this catchy quote however in this scenario, our main character, Alicia, most certainly did NOT have the perfect life. Alicia is a beautiful, green-eyed, redheaded artist who has a great amount of love towards her husband. Even though her childhood was the most traumatic, she’s managed to escape from her psycho father and aunt and enter a world of peace and love happily with, once again, her husband Gabriel whom she mentioned she could never live without. Or could she? After coming home late from work one night, he was gruesomely murdered by his wife, Alicia. Since then, she has never spoken a single word. Theo Faber, a forensic psychotherapist, also comes from a traumatic childhood background. Since the case of Alicia Berenson’s has been in the news, its been his life’s calling to work with her in the clinic. Soon enough, he gets the job at The Grove which is where Alicia stays. He’s determined to get her to speak about the incident. After his accomplishment, he’s unsure whether or not she’s speaking the truth. However the question the reader should be asking was why is Theo so interested in this case? Personally, my favorite part of The Silent Patient is learning about Alicia’s background. Her family members and friends would tell her she was mental or schizophrenic or that she needed to seek medical attention. Although this is true, I enjoy the fact that the author included her past to influence her behavior - it built suspense in his plot. Michaelides does an amazing job concluding a book with an ambiguous interpretation. The plot twist is there but it doesn’t deliver as well as it should. It leaves the reader pondering whether or not the book is even finished but also leaves the reader begging to know more. Although the author is a #1 New York Times Bestseller, I believe this book did not meet it’s expectations. Ever heard of “the woman was too stunned to speak”? Find out why Alicia took this phrase to the next level! Grab some pain killers and get ready for over using your brain to put all the puzzle pieces and clues Michaelides left for his readers!
