The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp (5/5)

‘Live in the moment’ is a phrase you’ve probably heard before. Protagonist Sutter Keely takes that motto to a whole new level. Tim Tharp creates a compelling story through the life of an 18 year old boy spending his senior year of high school partying day and night. He’s charming. He’s clever. He’s also hilarious. Yet most importantly he knows how to embrace the strangeness of the world. The story exemplifies the effects of Sutter's alcoholism and how it impacts his relationships with the people in his life. However, all it takes is one girl to turn Sutter's world right around. On a personal note, I really enjoyed this novel. Sutter’s narration is witty and realistic. The sarcasm and comical tone really tie into the seriousness of alcoholism and how it affects Sutter’s life. Living in the now and letting go of the past are two important themes in this novel. Overall, I would recommend this book as it portrays a different perspective on life.
