The Sun and The Star by Rick Riordan (4/5)

Nico di Angelo and his boyfriend, Will, journey into the depths of the underworld itself called Tartarus to answer the desperate calls of their friend, Bob the titan, and complete the prophecy given and repeated to them by Rachel Dare, Apollo’s prophet. Along the way they have to battle the dangerous terrain of tartarus and the underworld while avoiding or confronting demons and divine entities. Nico has to confront the dark side of his mind and personality that have chased many people away in the past, and come to terms with the nightmares that have plagued his life and the terrors he has been through. The two rely on each other and their fond memories of being up on the surface to make it past the difficult emotions and feelings the underworld imposes on their minds.

I was excited to finally have a book by Rick Riordan from Nico’s point of view and a story based around him. Nico was always a mysterious character in the Percy Jackson series and it is interesting to have an adventure mainly about him. The book was well written like the rest of Riordan’s books, but since he co-wrote it with Mark Oshiro, readers get to have a little taste of another writing style than usual. Plus some interesting insights into the LGBT relationship of Nico and Will because of Oshiro’s sexual and gender identities that show in his writing. However, I think a few parts of the story were dragged out a little, and they could’ve been shortened. Or, there were a few story materials that could’ve been expanded on instead.

Overall the book was definitely worth reading, I certainly recommend it for readers who are fans of fantasy and/or Rick Riordan’s other books. I do have to say that reading his other books, especially the ones that have Nico in them (The Heroes of Olympus series) would be helpful to read so that this book makes sense, and so you can have a basic understanding of Nico and what he’s like. On the last note, this story did have a dark setting (literally), but the ending was funny and I can’t wait for the next book.
