This book is a part of a 7 book series and is the third book in that series. Compared to the previous 2 books this book is not as good but still brings new idea to the table and is a fun read. The main conflict in this book is between the head magician Alex Stowe and the neighboring pirates at the island of fire taking their ships so in order to avoid this Stowe devises a plan to bring back their ships secretly and not start a fight. While on the ships Alex discovers his first sea creature being an eel/ and has to run away from it to survive while having his remaining ships being either destroyed or damaged along the way. Once finally reaching pirate island Stowe and his team discover the reason it has the name Island of Fire. He determines this with his encounter with the volcano in the islands excreting large amounts of magma. This is an issue to Alex as the island is covered in lava and they have to try getting inside of the island to return their ships. Through this challenge Alex and his team have to try to avoid the pirates at all cost as if even one catches them the whole plan could be at stake.
This book is not the best in the series so far but still brings new topics to the table as it includes details to change further plot points in the story. I feel like if this book was not created the rest of the series would change a lot. This book also continues the use of McManns incredible imagery skills to make you feel fully immersed in the world of Artìme.
This book takes the story in a different direction as it turns from Alex being stuck in a world where he could have no creativity into one where the possibility of creativity was endless. This is further exemplified by the concept of islands as since we know that there is 3 in the third book of the series we can come to the conclusion that since there are 7 books there are 7 islands in Alex’s world.
